English language courses for children

Young children who have never been exposed to English before are welcome to join this class. During the first trimester the teacher will not use a book with these children – we believe that the child should be eased into the English language world in a fun and exciting manner. In this class the children learn through singing, drawing, movement and being exposed to realia.

In this class we teach the children how to introduce themselves, tell their age and where they are from. We also introduce the phonics of the alphabet, the numbers, colours, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, weather and animals as well as other simple vocabulary and action words.

In trimester 2 and 3 the children will begin to use books which introduce them to instructions which will be helpful to them in the future when they begin to take exams. Most of this book work is done through listening exercises with guidance from the teachers.

Children with a basic level of English will join this class where they will study the Cambridge book – Kid’s Box 1. This class will review the basics of English, i.e. introducing themselves, numbers, colours, etc. before introducing the children to the book. The book covers vocabulary and simple sentence structures under the following themes – my school, favourite toys, my family, my clothes, our house, as well as others.

Children at this stage understand a lot of English and it is key to get them to speak more. Students in this class will use Cambridge Kid’s Box 2 in which they will grow their vocabulary and begin to use more difficult sentence structures. The themes of this book consist of – dinner time, my town, our hobbies and on holiday.

Children in this class are beginning to feel a little more comfortable with English. They can understand quite a lot and they make a good attempt to answer questions using the correct tense and structure.

This class will use Cambridge Kid’s Box 3 in which they will be introduced to more advanced vocabulary and more complex sentence structures using similar themes to what they have studied before – family matters, a day in the life, in the city, a day in the country, weather report, etc.

Children in this class are used to speaking English and they understand most of what is being said to them.

This class will use Cambridge Kid’s Box 4 in which they will be introduced to more complex vocabulary to what they have experienced before. They will be exposed to larger chunks of English when doing reading exercises and the listening exercises will become a little more difficult for them – this provides a good challenge for the children. Topics covered in this book will be similar that what they have studied so far but they will be a bit more advanced and will prompt a lot more speaking from the children – good sports, health matters, exploring your world and let’s party.

Children in this class are a lot more confident with English and usually make a good attempt to have a conversation with people.

This class will use Cambridge Kid’s Box 5. At this stage children will have built up a strong foundation for their English and this book gives them the opportunity to improve the accuracy and fluency of their conversational skills with vocabulary that they are familiar with. New themes are introduced giving them a more diverse knowledge of English – disaster, material things, senses, time for television.
